La Biomimetica deriva da bios=vita e mimesis=imitazione (Biomimicry in inglese) è lo studio consapevole dei processi biologici e biomeccanici della natura, come fonte di ispirazione per il miglioramento delle attività e tecnologie umane. La natura viene vista come Modello (Model), Misura (Measure) e come Guida (Mentor) della progettazione degli artefatti tecnici.

Tutti i sistemi naturali rispettano alcuni principi fondamentali:

* funzionano secondo cicli chiusi: non esiste il concetto di rifiuto
* si fondano su interdipendenza, interconnessione, cooperazione, processi che che sono alla base di tutti i sistemi viventi
* funzionano ad energia solare
* rispettano e moltiplicano la diversità.

Janine Benyus ha approfondito e divulgato efficacemente questi temi.

Un gran numero di applicazioni ispirate alla natura è già stato tradotto in applicazioni tecniche ed è commercialmente disponibile, come il Velcro, le superfici autopulenti ispirate alle foglie di loto (Nelumbo Nucifera) e gli adesivi strutturali, sviluppati a partire dal Geco e dalle valve di alcuni molluschi.

Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate) is a design discipline that seeks sustainable solutions by emulating nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies, e.g., a solar cell inspired by a leaf. The core idea is that Nature, imaginative by necessity, has already solved many of the problems we are grappling with: energy, food production, climate control, non-toxic chemistry, transportation, packaging, and a whole lot more.

Janine Benyus is an American natural sciences, she has co-founded the Biomimicry Guild, the Innovation Consultancy, which helps innovators learn from and emulate natural models in order to design sustainable products, processes, and policies that create conditions conducive to life. She is also President of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit organization whose mission is to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design.

Animals, plants, and microbes are the consummate engineers. They have found what works, what is appropriate, and most importantly, what lasts here on Earth. Instead of harvesting organisms, or domesticating them to accomplish a function for us, biomimicry differs from other “bio-approaches” by consulting organisms and ecosystems and applying the underlying design principles to our innovations.This approach introduces an entirely new realm for entrepreneurship that can contribute not only innovative designs and solutions to our problems but also to awakening people to the importance of conserving the biodiversity on Earth that has so much yet to teach us.
