Tappeto di Legno | Rug made from wood

Like an MC Escher optical illusion this incredible rug is not quite as it first appears - on one hand it appears to be a 3D wooden sculpture, and on the other it is a fluid textile. Designed by Elisa Stroyzk, a design student at Central Saint Martins in London, the rug is made from wood veneer offcuts bonded to a textile backing. Inspired by her materials and using them in new ways, Stroyzk blurs the reality between hard surfaces and fluid movement.

Stroyzk, who is originally from Germany, started playing with offcuts of veneer from a wood shop that was closing down at her school and wanted to see if she make wood move in fluid new ways. She hand and laser cut the veneer pieces and bonded them onto fabric, making the wood flexible. Her “wooden textiles” project for her MA is a mind-bending cross between parquet and carpet, which creates an absolutely stunning end result.
